The Crock of Charms Project.
Every charm has a story...
This project is full up (though see caveat below) but Keepsakes is open for business
Affordable Manuscript Assessments sought writers (illustrators also welcome) to take part in a book of short stories and poems called CHARMS.
Contact: mail AT affordablemanuscriptassessments DOT com OR sodgers AT iinet DOT net DOT au
PREMISE:
Imogen, Ashton, Joshua and Hannah, aged five, eight, eleven and thirteen, find a china crock in the attic of a house being renovated as a boutique hotel. Since the crock has no identifiable owners, they open it. Inside is a hoard of metal charms.
Each of these charms has an associated story or poem, which will be written by contributing authors. The charms come in a wide variety of anything from anchors to dinosaurs, elephants, hats, shoes, roses, clocks and so on. Each contributor received a charm by post or email, and the charm inspired a story or poem.
The stories stand alone, each having its own characters, theme, setting and period. The four children above do NOT appear in the stories. Neither does the attic setting. The linking text joins them so each story will address something of interest to one of the bracket-story children.
The charm can be used in the story as itself (i.e. a dinosaur charm can BE a dinosaur charm) or for what it represents (thus a dinosaur charm might become a living dinosaur, a statue, a fossil, a toy etc etc).
We will probably need to produce two or three volumes, released at the same time, to avoid spine cracking. If family/friend writers want to make sure their stories go in the same volume, let me know before Sept 1st.
Length – up to 1000 words (up to 1500 for the junior teen if you wish).
Genre – open
Age level – there are four, to match the ages of the bracket-story children;
(1) children 4-6, (2) children 7-8 (3) 9 – 11, (4) junior teen.
Tone - MUST be suitable for general exhibition and family friendly.
Deadline for choice of charm - July 7th 2013. DEADLINE REACHED
Absolute deadline for finished stories– First of September 2013, to give time to get the books printed before the end of the year.
Authors sub a bio, including links, photos, book covers, blurbs or whatever they like as long as it is family friendly and will fit on an individual author puff page. (See PUFF PAGE tab for a mocked-up sample.) The puff page is the authors' advertising stage. It may include contact details but authors are urged to make an informed decision about this. The more copies of the book get out there, the better the publicity value, but everyone will benefit equally from every copy.
The stories may contain a link to the author's other published or unpublished works.
Authors keep the copyright for individual stories.
No payment will be made for stories.
Authors have the right (but not the obligation) to buy as many copies of the anthology as they please at cost. They may then use these as gifts, prizes, fund raisers, author CVs. or re-sell them. Books will be bought from the printer, not from the editor. However, every contributor will receive a PDF of the book from the editor. This may be used as you please.
Stories will be edited and the edited version will be the property of the
author.
This is not a money-making venture (although anyone is welcome to resell copies they buy if they choose) but should make a lovely gift book (or set) and will also
showcase author talents. As the project progresses, more and more possibilities are popping up. With the format and variable themes and subjects this will be a wonderful resource for teachers and librarians for use at story time. CHARMS will probably be accompanied by a separate PDF of teacher-notes listing themes and subjects.
The real charms are made of Tibetan silver, pewter, bronze, brass, alloy etc. They are not at all expensive. However, although the real charms are so basic, you can
upgrade the charm in your story. Make it silver or gold, or magic metal if you
choose.
BOLD TYPE CHARMS ARE CLAIMED
Red charms have their stories submitted already.
A limited number of charms remain - either relinquished or in reserve. These include an owl, a butterfly, gold shorts, the hat, the naive giraffe and a deer, a heart, an aeroplane... email for complete list if you can have a story written and submitted by September 1st 2013.
